E.1 DEMO AND GENERAL INFORMATION
This appendix is designed to help new users of the Line Database get started using the program. We assume you have installed the database software using instructions in section 2.1 INSTALLING THE DESKTOP VERSION or section 2.2 INSTALLING THE ENTERPRISE VERSION.
A demo of the Line Database is available. See Section Error! Reference source not found. for instructions. We recommend you view this demo to learn the program basics.
Other sources of useful information include section 1.6 PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS and section 2.5 GLOSSARY.
E.2 EXAMINE A SAMPLE DATABASE
The program comes with two sample database file, Sample_English60.ald and Sample_Metric60.ald, with fictitious line data. (See section 2.1 INSTALLING THE DESKTOP VERSION or section 2.2 INSTALLING THE ENTERPRISE VERSION for the location of these two files,)
Start the Line Database. Open one of these sample files and try to make sense of the data that are in it. Call or write ASPEN’s tech support if you have questions.
E.3 CREATING A NEW DATABASE FOR YOUR DATA
The following shows you how to create a new instance of the line database.
The setup program copies two starter database files to the hard disk during installation. (See section 2.1 INSTALLING THE DESKTOP VERSION or section 2.2 INSTALLING THE ENTERPRISE VERSION for the location of these two files):
Empty_English60.ald A starter database for 60 Hz and English units of length.
Empty_Metric60.ald A starter database for 60 Hz and metric units of length.
These databases are empty except for approximately 650 commonly used wire types (See APPENDIX A: WIRE TYPE DATA).
You could start with the file Empty.ald if you wish to enter you own wire data from scratch. The program will automatically ask you for the system frequency and units of length when you open the file for the first time.
Desktop Version: Make a copy of one of the starter databases. Rename the file so that it will not be confused with a starter file. Please be reminded that the Line Database Licensing Agreement requires you to store all your data files in a local hard disk.
Enterprise Version: Make a copy of one of the starter databases and store it in a network directory in which the users have read/write privilege. We recommend that you rename the file so that it will not be confused with a starter file.
E.4 ENTERPRISE VERSION ONLY: CREATE USER ACCOUNTS
The Administrator can log in for the first time with the default user name of “admn” and password of “admn”. We strongly recommend that you execute the Tools | USER MANAGEMENT COMMAND to change this default account name and password immediately.
You can use this same command to create user groups and individual user accounts.
E.5 CUSTOMIZE THE DATA FIELDS
The following forms contain a data page in which the fields can be customized:
•The Wire Data Form
•The Overhead Structure Data Form
•The Corridor Data Form
•The Line Data Form
•The Overhead Line Section Data Form
•The Underground Line Section Data Form
•The Impedance Line Section Data Form
We suggest you customize the data fields in these forms as soon as possible. See 3.16 CUSTOMIZABLE DATA FIELDS for detailed instructions. Administrative privilege is required for this task in the Enterprise Version.
E.6 IMPORTING ASPEN LINE CONSTANTS PROGRAM DATA
If you were a user of the ASPEN Line Constants Program, you can import your line data into the Line Database with the Tools | IMPORT LINE CONSTANTS DATA COMMAND.
