APPENDIX A:  WIRE TYPE DATA

A.1 Summary of the Supplied Wire Type Data

The starter database files SAMPLE_ENGLISH60.ALD and SAMPLE_METRIC60.ALD shipped with the Line Database contain about 650 commonly used wire types.

SAMPLE_ENGLISH60.ALD is a database containing only the wire type data with lengths in English units.  SAMPLE_METRIC60.ALD is identical to SAMPLE_ENGLISH60.ALD, except the wire data are in metric units of length.

The wire type data in these databases were transcribed from tables 3.3.3 to 3.3.11 of the book, Transmission Line Reference Book , 345kV and Above, 2nd edition, revised, published by the Electric Power Research Institute, Palo Alto, California, 1992.  ASPEN has tried to ensure that the data in the files are correct but accepts no responsibility for any errors.  You should check the entries for wires used against the published tables before accepting the outputs of the program.  Not all the data in these tables have been transcribed.  A summary of the data in the file appears in the following table.

The entries in these files are named according to the format described below.  If you add additional wire types to these files, you must use this format if you want the new entries to be sorted correctly with those already in the file.  If you have a problem with the sorting, be sure that you are matching the capitalization convention used and then try adding or removing blank spaces between the components making up the name.

The format is as follows:

1)            Wire type, all caps. e.g., ACSR

2)            1 blank space

3)            The kcmil value in the format, 4 digits + decimal point + 1 digit. e.g.,  1678.5

Add leading blanks and/or a following blank when necessary to keep the total width equal to 6 characters.

3)            1 blank space (this is in addition to the possible trailing blank of part 3)

4)            The stranding e.g., 54/7.  All-Aluminum Conductors are designated in the same format with the second value set to 0, e.g. 61/0.

5)            1 blank space

6)            The name of the wire type. e.g. Bluebonnet. First letter upper case.

7)            1 blank space

8)            Temperature, e.g., 25C

There are some exceptions to the above rules for wire type data that lack certain entries.  For example, table 3.3.11 for the steel cables does not give the kcmil values; the conductor diameter was entered instead.
