Fault Location by Impedance

Digital fault recorders and most modern relays have the ability to capture the apparent impedance to a short circuit. Translating the apparent impedance to a physical location can be tedious and time consuming, especially for a multi-section line.

The Line Database has the ability to locate a short circuit along a transmission line given the impedance measured by a relay or fault recorder. The computed fault location is given as so many miles measured from one end of a corridor, and so many miles from one end of a line section.  The following is a sample distance calculator report:

Line: Tiger, 13.90kV, 31.00 miles, 20.16 Ohms

From: Berkeley

To: Concord

Impedance = 3.50 Ohm (17.36 % of whole line)

Line distance  = 9.48 miles (measured from Berkeley)

  in corridor 'OVH1'  9.48 miles from 'WASHLN' on line section 'Quartz'
